But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. (Daniel 1:8)
Here we see that Daniel and his three friends were determined to purify themselves on purpose so that they would not be defiled because of the king’s food.
Do not think this is easy. The “hard” part of the problem was, they had to be able to withstand pressure from above – if the king had found out and was angry about this, their heads would roll.
The “soft” part was, they had to overcome the temptations of their own flesh within. Aren’t you worried about the lack of nutrition from prolonged days of eating vegetables and drinking water only? Here comes Satan’s pillow talk and old-fashioned murmur.
Consider this, the food and drink offered to you are meant for the king himself. This is something that one can hardly imagine or even dare to imagine. It is like the head of a country invites you for dinner – would you easily refuse?
“Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials”; their hope of being set apart for God was at last realized.
This principle of being sanctified by God is in essence what the book of Revelation points out: Do not worship the image of the Beast.
For believers, when you believe in Jesus and have been set apart by Him from the world, you have entered this group of people who “do not worship the image of the Beast” and your name has been written in the Lamb’s book of life.
